We woke up shortly before midnight to get ready to climb the last bit to the top. We had packed headlamps but we had forgotten them in our accomodation in Tokyo but luckily everybody else around us had headlamps so we could still see fairly well. We had quite fast pace the day before and we thought that we would make it to the top quite fast too. We would have had a fast pace today too if it wasn’t for the queue that was formed along the trail. To walk up the trail during the night to see the sunrise wasn’t just us who had planned that. The trail was narrow and several guided groups took a long time to cross stony parts of the trail so during the time we walked up to the top, we stood still for a long time and got cold. Eventuelly we made it to the top and there was a small restaurant where we ate some cup noodles to get the heat up again.
Outside the restaurant, people had already started to get ready to watch and take photos of the sunrise. We thought there were too many people so we decided to start descend, which was a different path, and watch the sunrise where there were less people. We had been walking for about 20 minutes when the sun rose. A very beautiful sunrise, and for us, a less crowded one. The walk down was supposed to take about 4 hours according to other guides, but the descent was faster than expected and we were back at the 5th station after 2 hours of walking. We had to wait a while for the bus back to Tokyo, but this time it would take us directly to Tokyo.
